MARKET INSTRUMENTS

Understanding the instruments

Start with the structure and the main risks of each market, from forex to global indices, commodities and shares. A CFD takes part in price movement without holding the underlying asset, and leverage can enlarge losses as well as gains.

01 · MARKET MAP

See what moves each market

Similar product names can hide very different pricing, trading hours and drivers. Whether an instrument is actually offered, and on what terms, must be re-checked in the official product information.
01

Forex

This is about the relative value of currency pairs. Rate differentials, central bank policy, inflation and employment data, and liquidity are the main drivers.

02

Indices

Follow a market measure built from many companies. Look at its constituents, its trading hours and country-specific issues together.

03

Commodities

Energy, metals and agricultural markets. Supply and demand, inventories, seasonality, weather and geopolitics all feed into the price.

04

Share CFDs

A product linked to a company share price. Keep earnings, dividends and corporate actions separate from what it means to actually own the share.

05

Futures CFDs

Expiry and rollover matter here. Check how a change of contract month in the underlying future affects both price and cost.

06

Bonds

A market sensitive to interest rates and credit risk. Understand how rising rates relate to bond prices, and the maturity structure, first.

07

Crypto CFDs

These can be highly volatile and trade almost continuously. Always check regional availability and weekend trading terms.

02 · CHECKLIST

Compare four terms before you trade

Do not judge by the instrument name. Work from the contract details shown in your actual account.
A

Trading hours

Holidays, daylight saving and daily maintenance windows can change when you are able to place orders.

B

Cost structure

Check for spreads, commissions, swaps and currency conversion costs.

C

Margin

Check leverage, maintenance margin and the forced-liquidation threshold in your account screen.

D

Contract size

Verify the minimum trade size, the tick value and how profit and loss is calculated in a demo environment.
