Volatility does not flow in one direction only; it narrows and widens over and over. The longer the quiet stretch, the larger the expansion that follows tends to be, but it does not tell you the direction.

• Contraction is only a hint about the size of the move, not grounds for a direction.
• A wick that grazes the boundary line and a break by a confirmed close are different things.
• In an expansion stretch the stop loss distance widens as well, so the size has to be recalculated.
• In fast-moving stretches the fill price can differ from the plan.
