MARKET INSIGHTS

How to read a market briefing

A market post is not an answer key or a trade signal. Build the habit of checking the date, the reasoning, the opposite scenario and the actual product terms alongside it.

01 · COVERAGE

What the briefings cover

Rather than listing news, we separate the routes by which price could be affected from the uncertainty around them.
DAILY

Daily moves

Yesterday moves in the major markets and today scheduled events, set out in time order.

WEEK

Weekly outlook

The main variables for the week ahead, including economic data, central bank dates and company earnings.

MACRO

Economy and central banks

How inflation, employment, growth and monetary policy connect through to interest rates and currency values.

ASSET

Moves by instrument

Forex, indices, commodities and sector moves, separated by what is actually driving each one.

02 · READING METHOD

Review any analysis in four steps

Checking the reasoning and the conditions before the conclusion keeps overconfidence in check.
01

Date and time

When it was written, and whether any new announcement or price move has happened since.

02

Fact and interpretation

Note the officially published figures separately from the author interpretation of them.

03

The opposite scenario

Think through the conditions under which it moves against you, and where you would limit the loss.

04

Official terms

Check that the hours, costs and contract structure of what you would actually trade match what was analysed.
